NarrowIt ("we," "us," or "our") operates the NarrowIt mobile application and the narrowit.app website (together, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service.
By using NarrowIt, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information We Collect
A. Information You Provide
When you use NarrowIt, you may voluntarily provide:
- Profile information: Display name, graduation year, first-generation student status, admission status, and onboarding preferences (e.g., what matters most to you in a college).
- College selections: The schools you've been admitted to, your decision weights across seven dimensions (Cost, Academics, Career Outcomes, Campus Life, Location, Diversity, Size), and your final commitment choice.
- Financial information: Family income bracket (selected from ranges), estimated hourly wage, scholarship and financial aid amounts, and loan estimates. This information is stored only on your device.
- Journal and notes: Daily decision pulse entries, journal entries, campus visit notes, and free-text reflections. This information is stored only on your device.
- Home location: City, state, and approximate coordinates — either entered manually or detected via device GPS (coarse accuracy). Used to calculate distances to colleges. Stored only on your device.
- Social features: Poll questions and responses, friend predictions, and votes you cast.
B. Information Collected Automatically
- Authentication data: When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address, and a unique identifier. Apple may provide a private relay email address instead of your real email.
- Crash reports: If the app crashes, Firebase Crashlytics automatically collects device model, operating system version, app version, and the crash stack trace. No personal information is included in crash reports.
- Basic analytics: Firebase Analytics collects aggregated, anonymized usage data such as app opens, session duration, and device type. We do not track individual screens or actions.
- Loan referral engagement: When you view the loan information screen, we record which lender cards you see, tap, or dismiss, along with the school and loan amount shown. This data is linked to an anonymous session identifier, not your personal identity.
- Subscription status: RevenueCat, our subscription management provider, processes your App Store or Google Play purchase to determine your subscription status. We receive only whether you have an active premium subscription — not your payment details.
C. Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your precise GPS location continuously — location is requested once during onboarding at coarse accuracy, and only if you choose to share it.
- We do not collect contacts, photos, microphone, or camera data.
- We do not read your text messages, emails, or browsing history.
- We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide the Service: Calculate your college match scores, generate comparison charts, and power the decision matrix.
- Enable social features: Let friends vote on your polls and make predictions about your college choice.
- Improve reliability: Identify and fix crashes and bugs through Crashlytics.
- Understand usage patterns: Aggregated analytics help us improve the app experience for all users.
- Display relevant financial information: Show student loan options and estimated costs based on your selected schools and financial details.
- Manage subscriptions: Verify your premium status to unlock premium features.
3. Where Your Data Lives
On Your Device (Local Storage)
The majority of your data stays on your device and is never transmitted to our servers. This includes:
- Your decision weights and preference settings
- Journal entries, campus visit notes, and daily pulse reflections
- Financial details (income bracket, scholarships, loan estimates)
- Home location coordinates
- Vibe Check results
- School cache data
If you delete the app, this local data is permanently erased.
In the Cloud
A limited subset of data is stored on our servers (hosted on Supabase, with infrastructure in the United States) to enable social features:
- Your display name and list of admitted schools
- Polls you create and votes you cast
- Predictions made by or about you
- Loan referral engagement events (anonymized)
4. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policies:

We do not share your personal data with advertisers. Loan referral engagement data is collected by us — not by lender partners — and is used internally for analytics purposes.
5. Data Retention and Deletion
Local data: Stored on your device until you delete the app or use the "Delete Account" feature in Settings.
Cloud data: Retained as long as your account exists. When you use the "Delete Account" feature, we permanently delete all your cloud data including your profile, polls, votes, predictions, and engagement events.
Crash reports: Firebase retains crash data for up to 90 days.
Analytics data: Firebase Analytics retains aggregated data for up to 14 months, after which it is automatically deleted.
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings > Delete Account within the app.
6. Children's Privacy
NarrowIt is designed for high school students who have been admitted to college, typically ages 17 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age.
If you are under 13, please do not use NarrowIt. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will promptly delete that information.
If you are between 13 and 18, we encourage you to review this policy with a parent or guardian.
7. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Delete your account and all associated data (via Settings > Delete Account)
- Opt out of analytics collection (contact us)
- Request a copy of your data
California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell your personal information.
European Residents (GDPR)
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area, you have additional rights under the GDPR including the right to data portability, the right to rectification, and the right to object to processing. Our lawful bases for processing are consent (for optional features like social polls) and legitimate interest (for crash reporting and basic analytics).
8. International Data Transfers
NarrowIt's cloud services are hosted in the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the US where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. By using NarrowIt, you consent to the transfer of your information to the United States.
9. Cookies and Local Storage
The NarrowIt mobile app does not use cookies. Our website (narrowit.app) uses browser local storage and session tokens to enable authentication for features like web voting. These are essential for the Service to function and are not used for advertising or tracking.
10. Business Transitions
If NarrowIt is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or a prominent notice in the app before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
11. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including:
- Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS)
- Row-level security policies on our cloud database
- Anonymous authentication by default — you can use core features without providing personal information
- Local-first architecture — most sensitive data never leaves your device
No method of electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this page and, where appropriate, through an in-app notice.
Your continued use of NarrowIt after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
